Jetcat Clubhuuse #3

Oni Press
Writer/Artist: Jay Stephens

Price: $3.25 US

The bizarre creative mind of Jay Stephens meets the kiddie comics genre in this offbeat but fun and original book. The extremely light tone of this title is a refreshing change of pace in the world of comics. This book is bound to be of interest of fans of such other super-hero properties as The Powerpuff Girls and The Tick.

In the book's main story, Jetcat must contend not only with a water shortage in Oddville, but her grumbling stomach as well. Meanwhile, her pal Tod struggles to maintain his will power and refrain from eating Jetcat's lunch, especially the cookies. In other features, Jetcat and friends are swallowed whole by a rampaging giant, Tutenstein considers getting a tattoo, Oddette chases a runaway flame through his house, and Jetcat must contend with her evil doppelganger.

Stephens has a real flair for unusual characters and their design. Space Ape Number 8 is a load of fun, and I'd love to see more of the various members of the Two-Fisted Five. Unfortunately, Stephens fails to identify all of them for new readers (or does this issue mark their debut?).

The overly simplistic art style and approach to the lettering is surprisingly charming. They're in keeping with the fanciful tone of the plots and characters. Fortunately, there's also a strong flow to the action.

What I enjoy most about Jetcat Clubhouse, though, are the characters' attitudes. They're all fiesty but cute, forceful yet innocent. One can't help but smile at the saccharine world in which they live. This is a great comic book that parents can enjoy with their children.
