There's good news and there's bad news.
The good news: Jimenez's contribution to the ever-intrusive "Our Worlds At War" summer crossover really doesn't dwell much on the event at all. One needn't know much about the crossover to follow this story. Furthermore, this one-shot serves as an excellent primer for those new to the world of Wonder Woman. Jimenez's stories in the regular series have drawn heavily upon on the George Perez run on the title, and those who might have been lost can find their way again thanks to this book.
The bad news: Jimenez has a lot of ground to cover, and it makes for a dense read. This is extremely dialogue-heavy and is set mostly in flashbacks. It makes for an arduous read.
As the two conflicting factions of Amazons wait for word of the war with Imperiex and Queen Hippolyta from their oracles, the women warriors share stories of the Amazons' history, how they came to Themyscira and how both Diana and Hippolyta came to be Wonder Women.
Though three pencillers are listed as contributing to this comic book, most of the art comes from Cliff Chiang. I rarely see his simple style adorning a comic-book script, but when I do, I always enjoy it. He and von Grawbadger capture an appropriate sense of the historic here, and Mulvihill's colors reinforce it.
The verbosity of Jimenez's script strike me as a necessary evil, given the nature of the book, but it really didn't make for an enjoyable read. The script is incredibly dense, and while the story is about accessibility to the current state of the Wonder Woman legend, it really doesn't welcome the reader into that world.
Though a couple of good stories have arisen out of the "Our Worlds At War" event, the quality of this book is pretty much typical of what's resulted from the crossover as a whole. Hopefully, this will be the last three-month crossover DC tackles for some time.
