One of the Good Ones

by Geoff Johns

There are a lot of books out there. A lot of really great books. But this is just one of them...

FABLES #7
written by Bill Willingham
illustrated by Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha

Fables #7

What is this book about?

The characters from every Fairy Tale exist in the real world. Some of them live in New York City's Fabletown, others who can't pass for humans live upstate in a town called the Farm. These are their stories...

I love George Orwell's Animal Farm, I love Grimm's Fairy Tales and I love Law & Order. And Fables is all three of them rolled up into one compelling and thought provoking monthly book.

Bill Willingham has created an amazing analytical look at the characters we're familiar with from stories long past told. From the Big Bad Wolf acting as a detective, to Goldilocks leading a revolution, to the Mother in the Shoe and her gun-toting kids, this world is always filled with a fun and twisted take on the Fables.

Although issue #7 is part 2 of a story arc, it has a previously before box that gets anyone up to speed. And since we already know most of the characters, it's an easy jumping on point. I'd suggest going to grab the first six issues if you can find them, but I expect they're long gone from your store as they are from mine. Thankfully, Vertigo is rushing out a trade soon.

An interior panel from FablesIn issue #7, one of the Three Little Pigs is murdered in an attempt to ignite a civil war in the Fairy Tale community. His head set up on display in the Farm for all to see. There are rising tensions between those Fables that kind blend into the rest of the world and those that have to retreat to the Farm.

I don't want to spoil much more about the story, but there's an hilarious bit with the youngest of the Three Bears that is worth the price of the book alone.

Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialhoa (who I had the pleasure to meet in Spain this past month, a very nice and talented guy) turn in some impressive work. I particularly like their takes on the Jungle Book characters.

As many people say, Vertigo is putting several gets titles right now. It's an imprint I've become eager to check out, and this book is among the top of my list right now.
