One of the Good Ones

by Geoff Johns

There are a lot of books out there. A lot of really great books. But this is just one of them...

Y: THE LAST MAN #2

Y The Last Man #2

Damn was that good. Man, I hate even spoiling this issue but I have to get you to read this book. First off, it's only on #2 so if you can, and it might be hard, go track down #1 too. (Don't wait for trade!)

Brian K. Vaughn, Pia Guerra, and company have just put out what looks to not only be my favorite new book by Vertigo, but my favorite new monthly book launched this year.

Y: The Last Man centers around a young guy named Yorick who, due to unexplained circumstances, is the only male left on the planet. One day, every man and boy dies. Pilots flying planes, soldiers, doctors, convicts, and probably a ton of comic book professionals.

Yorick is an escape artist, and he's just escaped the inescapable - death. Now, this all went down right when he was talking to his fiancee, who is literally on the other side of the world in Australia. He asks her to marry him, with a strange ring in his possession, and before she can answer the phone goes dead.

Yorick might speculate that the ring had something to do with him surviving, but I think Brian's got a trick or two up his sleeve regarding this.

An interior page from Y The Last Man #2Issue #2 picks up two months later, and the world is a very different place. Groups of women dubbed "Amazons" claim that God killed all the men and they're on a rampage destroying sperm banks. The government is desperately trying to pull itself together, searching for the new President of the United States. And, in what is my favorite scene in the book, others whose careers have become useless have turned to other jobs. In this case, a former model is now a "Garbage Girl" - picking up rotting male carcasses in a garbage truck.

Brian has done an extensive amount of research and that shows through with flying colors. He's thought every aspect of this new world through - from the government chain of command to how ridiculously useless boob jobs are (which actually applies to our world too). The execution so far is brilliant. Pia is doing beautiful work here, especially on page 4. And, dammit, the covers are slick too.

Again, don't wait for the trade, go grab what is surely the next long-running Vertigo book and enjoy it monthly.
