Thought Balloons

The weblog of Don MacPherson

I'm giving the weblog thing a shot. Consider this an initial, tryout stage. I hope it will be an ongoing thing, but for now, it's an experiment.

Rented About a Boy on the weekend. Heard nothing but good things about this Hugh Grant flick from a number of people... most of whom have good taste in movies. So I headed over to Rogers Video on Friday to pick up a couple of movies.

Hated it. An utterly condescending movie in which all of the character treat each other like shit and have their happily-ever-after because... well, because that's what audiences want, I suppose. The movie's all about unhappy people who try to fill their own emptiness by clinging to others instead of addressing the inner issues that are the real sources of their personal dissatisfaction.

Speaking of movies, I went to see Daredevil at the theatre Sunday afternoon, mainly because I realized it would be my last chance to do so for several days thanks to working a night shift at the paper this week. Pleased to find that the showing was well attended but not packed to the brim. Nothing more uncomfortable than watching a movie like a sardine with a bad seat.

If you want to know what I thought of it, I've posted a review (click HERE). One of the things I don't mention is how those around me reacted to the film. I assumed most of the folks in the theatre weren't all that familiar with the DD property and were therefore viewing the film from a much different perspective than my own. It was clear... they loved the effects, and they loved the comic relief provided by Jon Favreau and Colin Farrell.

Saw the X2 trailer for the first time in front of DD. Looks like a fun flick, with a lot more in the way of money behind the thing in order to take the cool factor up a notch. One thing is clear: Nightcrawler is going to be the Next Big Thing... at least when it comes to the wider, non-comics-reading pop-culture audience. Who'd a thunk it?
